Get to know Lia, Principal of Specky Paraplanners and the QLD chair for AFA Pulse, a Community of Practice designed to connect and support paraplanners and help them grow at every stage of their career.
Lia answers our Power 7 questionnaire and shares the personal and professional advice she’d give her younger self, as well as where we can find her most weekends.
- Why is financial advice important to you?
To me, there’s no doubt that financial advice changes peoples’ lives for the better. It’s empowering! I’m grateful to be a part of an industry where I can use my strengths to make a positive difference.
- Your favourite quote?
It’s hard to pick just one, so here’s two, one personal and one work related:
“You can’t make time, you can only take time.” – Unknown
“There is nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency, something that should not be done at all.” – Peter Drucker
- What advice would you give to your younger self?
Check your mirrors! Would’ve saved me a fortune in panel beating.
On a serious note, I would encourage my past self to take advantage of every learning opportunity that comes my way.
- Your most recent ‘high-five’ moment?
We’ve recently implemented automated feedback requests for every plan we complete. It’s not a perfect process (yet!), but it’s been great to get instant feedback on our work rather than having to assume no news is good news.
- What can we find you doing most weekends?
Sweating it out at Boot Camp and eating too much at brunch (the reason I need the boot camp!). If my fiancé is home we’ll also be out on the motorbike exploring; Townsville is great because you can ride all year round!
- Have you seen anything lately that made you smile?
My two dogs are a constant source of joy. Charlie (our German Shepherd) chases dragonflies, which never fails to get a smile out of me!
- What are you reading right now?
About a year ago I switched to audiobooks so I could ‘read’ more and minimise my eye strain, which I would highly recommend for anyone who sits a computer all day like we all do! Right now I’m listening to ‘The Wife and the Widow’ by Christian White and ‘Big Ideas for Small Businesses’ by John Lamerton.
