In this two-part event we hear from industry leaders Dawn Thomas and Michael Lee about the journey into their respective professions and views on the Future of Financial Advice, plus gain valuable insights from Matt McGuinty on data analytics and the ability to leverage off financial planning systems using tech, including Xplan.

Meet our guest speakers 

Dawn Thomas, Financial Adviser, Integro 

Dawn Thomas is the Association of Financial Adviser’s (AFA) 2019 Female Excellence in Advice award winner and is passionate about collaborating with people to help them achieve the financial and life goals that they are after. She describes her financial advice style as heart-led, where financial knowledge and goals are achieved through an inclusive, trusted relationship between adviser and client. She pursued the Masters of Applied Finance and Certified Financial Planner designation early in her career as a demonstration of commitment to clients and the financial planning industry. She is also an SMSF Specialist Accredited adviser. Originally from Singapore and a Media Studies and Mass Communications graduate from Murdoch University, she was drawn to the financial planning industry in 2008 because of her ability to connect to people and their life stories. She is a part-time PhD candidate at Edith Cowan University, researching the superannuation behaviour of Gen Z. She is the National Chair of the AFA Inspire group, which aims to create a tribe for women in the industry and help them thrive. When she is not providing financial advice, you will find her relaxing by cooking for loved ones or playing hockey.

In 2020,  as a recognition of financial literacy work and advocacy of the financial planning industry, Dawn was listed in Financial Standard’s Power 50, which recognises the most influential financial advisers in Australia.  She was a National Finalist for Adviser of the Year in 2017, 2018, 2019 (Women in Finance Awards & Women in Financial Services Awards). She was National Finalist for Young Leader of the Year in 2017 (Women in Finance Awards). In 2018 she was a National Finalist for Advocate of the Year (Women in Financial Services Awards), recognising her work around lifting the financial literacy of women in her community.

 

Michael Lee – Consultant, Flinders Financial 

Michael commenced his Financial Service career in 1987 at Gannon Growden Schonell & Associates [GGS].  GGS operated as a General Agent of AMP, however over the next 5 years converted to a Life Broker as well as holding an Australian Financial Services and General Insurance Broker Licences. In the early 90’s’, and ‘which later merged with Snowball to move onto the ASX and was later bought by IOOF’, ‘In December 2020, Michael retired from his position as a Private Client Adviser.

After becoming a shareholder of GGS in 1995, he was added to the Board as a Director in 1999.  This position was held up until the eventual merger of GGS with other practices nationally to form the unlisted public company, Shadforth Financial Group [SFG], which later merged with Snowball to move onto the ASX and later bought by IOOF.  In December 2020, Michael retired from his position as a Private Client Adviser at and has since taken a consulting role at Flinders Financial Services, a boutique practice located in the CBD.

The experience gained across 34 years has assisted to develop skillsets accustomed to almost all circumstances facing advisers today.
 

Matt McGuinty – Director and Co-Founder of FinTech Strategic Partners

Matt provides independent software and management consulting to businesses within the financial services industry. 

Prior to co-founding FinTech Strategic Partners, Matt was a Key Account Manager at Iress and General Manager of an advisory business. 

His experience ranges from consulting boutique financial services businesses to designing and configuring complex Client Relationship Management systems, processes and reporting for ASX listed companies.
